Football Generates Big Data

What is Big Data?

Big data is collection of huge amounts of data that is complex to process using on hand database management tools or traditional data processing applications. The analysis of this kind of data becomes necessary in some cases such as scientific, telecom, defence analysis or business purpose to gain knowledge about some unknown patterns and relations.

Earlier the size of data which was used was of order of megabytes or gigabytes. But nowadays, data is being processed in ZETA BYTES i.e of an approximate order of 1000*1000*1000 megabytes.

How football Generates Big Data ?

Big data isn't just working behind the scenes – it’s extending its influence to the Soccer field as well. Big data helps sports teams and athletes to improve their performance as well as the relationship with their fans.

In 2014, FIFA World Cup, generated massive amounts of data, that includes player performance, video data from on-field cameras capable of capturing thousands of data points per second, including player position and speed.

How FIFA analyzed the Big Data ?

FIFA used a tool, which is capable of analyzing Big Data, called Match_Insights. Then data  goes into the SAP database from the Match_Insights tool, that runs analytics and allows coaches to target performance metrics for specific players and give them feedback via their mobile devices. Match Insights tool also depicts the speed of the player which analyzes the team  stats about average possession time.

How this tool was successful ?

1. This tool show's the team's virtual “defensive shadows” that show how much area a player can protect with his own body. Also, it gives the strategy applied by his opponents, so that the Coach can immediately change their own strategy of playing and can defeat with a good margin.

2. Off field, the player look at the strong and weak points of their opponents, like if they know that team X were very concentrated in the middle and not focused on other areas, then the opponent can target those areas easily.

3. In World Cup Semi-Finals-2010, German players have ball possession of 3.4 seconds but after this SAP Match Insights tool, they reduced the possession of ball to 1.1 seconds.

BIG Data not only evolved in domains like science, business, eventually in sports also it is very useful. Match Insights tool collect information per second and stores in the SAP database which can be re-evaluated in future for betterment of the team and for the organization.
