Sports and Big Data




Big Data analytics involves analyzing massive quantities of data generated by business activities, organisations or newer sources such as social media feeds. Individuals, companies and governments generate a total of 2.5 quintillion bytes of data on a daily basis, 90% of which has been created in the last two years only.

The trend of Big Data analytics has hit the sports industry as well, with several sports organisations and sports-related companies investing in new technologies and resources, and upgrading their database management approaches to keep up with changing times.

In sports, just as in business, an increasing volume of information is being captured and collected. Technological advances in big data analytics can soon result in exponential growth for the companies which market in the sports industry.

The film “Moneyball” and the story of baseball General Manager Billy Beane, may well be credited with bringing this rapidly developing area into the public gaze in recent times. Beane would use statistical analysis to not only determine who would be on the field but also what decisions players should make once they were selected. And of course, it helped him to gain some victories.

There are a number of key players who have invested in this technology to generate statistics which is of a commercial interest to them. For instance, take SAP, one of the world’s largest software providers for business, which has recently created applications for the sport and entertainment industry.
" In just 10 minutes, 10 players with 3 balls can produce over 7 million data points," Oliver Bierhoff, brand ambassador for SAP AG and manager of the German national football team, told in a press conference in Brazil this week.
 Big data analytics give well-structured and accurate insights which can help coaches and players monitor and analyse their performances, and work towards their continual improvement. It also helps them keep track of their own progress, and also by giving a record of past performances, they help the players assess their preparedness in a more accurate manner.

Not only does this technology help the teams improve their performance, it also helps commercial bodies and companies to gather information and statistics which they can use to churn in profits.

SAP match insights developed with the German Football Association, use the data generated during the game and give the results of the analysis to coaches and players for self-assessment and improvement.

In cricket...

This IPL season, Kolkata Knight Riders and SAP claimed that they used customized SAP - HANA based platform, for evaluating players during the auction, analyzing their games for developing strategies, and increasing fan engagement.

In basketball...

The US National Basketball Association (NBA) has commissioned the technology of SportVU player tracking system to be used in all games from 2014, which will generate data and analysis reports to be used by all the teams for performance evaluation of individual players.
