Big Data : BlackBerry's Project Ion

Project Ion is an initiative to provide an analytics infrastructure for businesses collecting and processing the data used by all of the BlackBerry's combined devices. In simple terms, it means that the project is aimed at using all the Big Data obtained from its wide range of devices to develop customized products that cater to a number of industries.

For instance, it is reported that BlackBerry will soon be launching a health care platform, centred around Big Data analytics. The platform will make use of the immense amount of data collected from thousands of medical devices, which were tied to BlackBerry's operating system. Professionals would be able to  make an educated guess based on massive and reliable set of data collected from around 16,000 connected medical devices.

Though BlackBerry  did not intend to create a Big Data solution in Project Ion, it nevertheless became a platform for pooling its Big Data resources and deploying it as customized solutions for specific industries. Project Ion, therefore, faces stiff competition from its counterparts, namely Tibco Software and Tableau Software, which sell services that collect and analyze data to make more informed decisions for various firms. Though it must be noted that BlackBerry's Project Ion differs from both Tibco and Tableau on one aspect. Both Tibco and Tableau are leading Big Data services, Tibco based on fast data, and Tableau based on slow data, provide customers with all the collected and analyzed data. Project Ion, on the other hand, provides its clients with not only access to data, but also products derived from the information collected that enable them to carry out other customized functions, a feature which is so far not available in any of the current Big Data services.

BlackBerry has hence, proved itself a step ahead of its rivals, and Project Ion may be one of the most successful projects for BlackBerry in the near future.
