Cloud Computing : The Next Big Thing

Cloud computing, in simple terms means storing and accessing data and programmes over some virtual infrastructure such as the internet instead of on physical infrastructure like servers and hard drives. A number of companies are now banking on cloud computing technologies as they help reduce the costs of maintaining physical storage devices and machinery. According to a recent survey by Nasscom, cloud computing has become so popular that client investments are bound to increase this year; and as much as 20 - 25 per cent of large outsourcing deals for Indian companies providing information technology services now involve cloud computing. Another report claims that 80 percent of the large companies in North America are either looking forward to using cloud computing sevices,or they already have. In fact, the cloud computing market may soon be generating $100 billion a year.

Cloud computing management services as provided by most technology services include infrastructural support such as 24/7 monitoring, operating system patching, anti - virus schemes, with the prerequisite being skills in software defined environment.  Cloud computing is an evolving sector, there are several aspects where cloud computing is lagging behind, such as in security concerns, thereby increasing the opportunities for further research as well as growth and development in this field.

One of the major features of cloud computing is that it enables the user or the client to access the data stored on the cloud from anywhere, that is any location, operating system, hardware system etc. equipped with proper internet connection. This in turn means that in case of any hardware failure, the data stored on the cloud remains safe and secure. For instance, if a user's smartphone gets broken, all the data of the phone which has been stored on the cloud can be accessed from any other device, be it another phone, or a laptop, desktop etc. , provided a secure internet connection is established.

Cloud computing is bound to be benefited by the latest drive to store anything and everything on the internet. As the amount of data increases everyday and more and more companies are relying on Big Data technologies, the need to store up all the data is a monumental task, therefore leading to a surge in sales of cloud computing services.
The verdict is out, cloud computing is here to stay.
